Everyone has encountered someone– a friend, co-worker, passer-by—whose look was off. Maybe their clothing did not fit quite right or the proportions of the outfit were wrong. Maybe their pants or skirt was too short or their shoes really did not compliment the rest of what they were wearing. Nonetheless, it was safe to say that their overall appearance could easily have done with another look, some additional attention. In a less generous moment, we may even have asked ourselves “Didn’t they look in a mirror before they left the house?” Well, maybe they did, but not the right kind...One of the greatest investments you can make to achieve a pulled-together appearance is a full-length mirror. It doesn’t have to be expensive or take up a lot of space—a simple model that attaches to the back of a bedroom, bathroom or closet door will do the job nicely. Just make sure that the mirror sits or hangs in a place that is easy to access and gives you a good vantage point, so you will be sure to use it. It should also sit or hang in a space that has good lighting, so you can see details clearly.A floor-length mirror, especially one that hangs flat, has an advantage over other mirrors. Not only does it reflect your total look, from head to toe, it lets you see how the overall styles, shapes, proportions and colors of what you are wearing work together as a unit. You may have some fantastic pieces of clothing on that fit well and look great on you, but that do not work together to create a complimentary look. You could be creating an effect that is completely different from the one you have in your mind—an effect that becomes obvious in a full-length mirror. Outfits with overly uniform color, different shades of the same color, colors that clash with each other, colors that do not compliment the overall look or colors that do not compliment the wearer may not point themselves out in a smaller mirror, but become obvious in a full-length mirror. A red suit with red shoes and a red purse may sound like a great idea, until you see the head-to-toe effect and realize it is too bold for the wedding you are attending. A black top and pants you think match each other show up as two different shades of black in a full-length mirror and do not portray the pulled together look you were hoping to convey your job interview. Ties that may seem too bold or just right may reveal themselves as either the perfect choice or a misstep. Some details are not noticeable until you look in a full-length mirror, like a crooked hem, a too short or long pant or skirt, an out-of-place accessory, or a rip or tear. A glance in the mirror and you can determine if you need to change into opaque tights and lower heels to tone down a short skirt, or change to a higher heel shoe to prevent a dragging pant hem. You may discover that the dress or skirt you are wearing has an uneven hem or does not hang properly with a particular belt. You may find that the bright pink sash you are wearing with a black dress is too much contrast and visually cuts you in half.Full-length mirrors also help you to build confidence in your appearance, because by seeing yourself head-to-toe and making any necessary adjustments, you know that your outfit is just right. You can remove any extra accessories that make you look busy, check that your clothes are hanging properly and have a proportion that compliments your body and adjust details that affect fit. Used daily, your full-length mirror can become your fashion BFF that sends you out the door never looking less than your very best. For more info visit Full length mirror.
